Drove Road Community Garden

The sun was shining as volunteers gathered at the Drove Road Community Garden site on Saturday. Following months of discussions and planning , we could mark out the first paths and growing beds.
Four tonnes of bark chips had been delivered and the new wheelbarrows were ready for action. Members of the community ferried bark chips to the paths marked out with string. The ground was prepared by a team trying to break up the lumps and bumps of the flinty ground that had baked hard in the early spring sunshine we’ve had here on the south coast.
Tea and biscuits provided the fuel we needed to complete laying out eight 1x7m beds with bark chips paths in between. It also gave us a chance to get to know each other, discuss the seeds we could sow and when we should order plug plants.
During the sunny morning, we were also joined by a red kite that was soaring in the valley above the fields. A few members of the group shared how the birds had been spotted on the fringes of Woodingdean and there’s rumours they may have set up home here.
